Introduction

In the first semester of Year 2, we could select client projects that we will want to undertake for the semester. I chose to be part of the design team for the TransMedia 2022 Exhibition, where we had to create a brand guideline, poster, website design, and other assets for students who will be displaying work at the show. I also selected Sail ID, which was initially a development project in which the client wanted a way to quickly identify sailboats from a single picture. Finally, I undertook a final project: Winchester Snowsports, another university-based project which involved creating brand guidelines, a logo and other artwork for the Snowsports Team at Winchester University.

The Brief
After taking on the TransMedia project, the group and I split the work up equally. We looked at the brief and planned what assets we needed to design. We all decided to take one main task each and then share another. As my main task, I took on the website and worked on business cards and horizontal and vertical banners with Josie.

Research
I started by researching exhibition branding around the world. I found that traditional exhibition designs represented a lot of digital art, and I followed this design practice in my logo designs.

Logo Development
We started designing the logo as this was a circuital part of the project to set the mood for the exhibition. I created a few traditional print style logos with a digital twist. We decided to represent the statement: Breaking Out as this was the first year the exhibition would run after COVID cancelled it and brought it online.

Once I collated all of my logo designs, I started developing them and choosing to put this logo ahead. I represented all 6 disciplines in Digital Media: Design, Development, 3D Visualisation, 3D Environments, Game Development and CAD.
As this was a client project, we presented our logo to our clients and cohort in a vote. Another team member, Sean, got his logo chosen, utilising a brushstroke style that mixes digital art with traditional art.

Web Design
The next step was to start designing the Website for the exhibition. This is critical in networking with potential clients for the students. I Then designed this on XD with the students in mind and using the guidelines set by Ethan, our fourth designer, I created a mobile-first website.

The mobile design uses a tiled system made up of individual components. These will stack using a flex grid and be easy to tap and interact with. With feedback from the clients, I developed the colours further to stick to the guidelines. The header features a burger menu that represents the proportions of the heading of the different pages.

The desktop design follows the grid system and will adapt to the size of the screen (responsive). I developed the guidelines for the website on XD. When a developer for TransMedia starts developing the website, they can follow my measurements and responsive design to mimic this design in either HTML 5 or WordPress.

Business Cards
As the exhibition is in person this year, it became clear that a business card would be a great addition to anyone part of the TransMedia Show. I designed these business cards to represent the student's discipline, and a quick like to their specific page using a QR code.

Banners and AR
The banners were designed to follow the poster designs by the other designers. I then went into Adobe Dimensions and worked on some different presentation techniques to show the clients our work, and I created some AR mockups that can be viewed in real-time in part of the exhibition.

Daniel Herbert

We started to put together the brand guidelines, and I created some high-quality 3D mockups of our work to display to the client in the handover.

Project Conclusion

The TransMedia 2022 group client project mainly was a success. As a team of 4 designers, there were challenges of splitting up work and, in some cases agree on a final design for specif parts. However, with Ethan's brand guidelines by the end of the project, we have a handover piece that other designers can follow and keep to the art style.

TransMedia 2022 Exhibition Semester 2 - The design behind the TransMedia Year Book and assets for the virtual exhibition held annually for Digital Media Winchester

Daniel Herbert

The Brief
I was tasked with creating the year book for all first, second, third and master students in the Digital Media Department, as well as creating all hero images and mockups for the virtual exhibition.
The year book was made from scratch in InDesign and assets created in Illustrator. I designed all feature pages and created a layout that could fit all 150 students studying across 6 disciplines over 4 years.

Daniel Herbert

The assets for the virtual exhibition are frames that display the students 1080 x 1080 hero work with their names, discipline and year group. I also created these from scratch and had to organise over 150 students work and work with the 3-D visualiser who was involved in the virtual exhibition.

Sail ID - Being able to identify any registered sail boat instantly

This project was designed to be a development project to create a system in which an individual or company can scan through thousands of photos in Adobe Lightroom and get data to match each photo with the sail number for future look-up. I researched this and found no app could scan sail numbers and return a result, so I adapted the client's brief (with a vision of not submitting it to the client) to design an app that can scan sail numbers in real-time.

I designed the wireframes in Adobe Illustrator and created a prototype in Adobe XD. The app starts up straight to the camera view. Users can either take a photo and then get the sail number from that photo or turn on the scan function, and it will constantly scan and store sail numbers in the history section. When the image is taken, the user can select the specific sail they want to be examined (if there are multiple). This returns all public results for that sail/boat and is automatically saved in the history section.

Winchester Snowsports - How I branded a Winchester University Team

Winchester Snowsports is a Winchester University Club. I designed a logo using the University of Winchester Purple and designed multiple advertising posters for social media using a strict typography scheme.
The client need the incorporation of there phase keep your tips up. I also produced advertising for their annual snow trip.

Enhanced Skills

Having only having a few client projects I dramatically improved my experience getting briefs that were not premeditated by myself. Whistle most of my projects were University based I still had to present my work to the clients and work with them to improve and match there image.

Time Management

I mainly used Trello in a 6 column view: To-Do, Backlog, Sprint Backlog, In Progress, Completed and Approved. This was fundamental for me to keep all my work ordered and a great visual aid as a person with dyslexia. Balancing 3 projects at the same times was a challenge but by breaking it down into manageable chunks I was able to tackle these projects.
